A. The Denomination’s Dilemma
From wanting to counteract the decline in membership to reaching the whole world for Jesus, the reasons for denominations wanting to plant churches and develop new ministries are many. However, what denominations face is a changed ministry context in which the paradigms of the past are no longer appropriate including:
Planting generic churches that are miniature versions of larger ones. Centering churches around a worship service. Thinking of community in a geographical or sacramental way. Defining discipleship as theological discussions and charitable giving. Seeing a pastor as a full-time clergyperson.
B. The Planter’s Dream
Spiritual and religious changemakers, entrepreneurs, innovators, and changemakers often face denominational structures unsuitable for their temperament as well as experiencing a difficult time adapting their preference for “going-it-alone” with the requirement to be part of the team.
What they wish, and have hope, for is the incarnation of their dream without the drag of detractors and opinion-givers who seldom understand the basis for and the end goal of their new ministry project.
C. The Dreamery’s Capabilities
Therefore, instead of trying to fit the act of giving birth to something new into a denomination’s given preference for stability, The Dreamery is a flexible structure that bridges the enduring message of our religious institutions with the entrepreneurial spirit of our culture.
We accomplish this by:
1) Strategy – Unbundling the usual definition of “church” (membership + building + clergy + laity + programs) and then specializing one or more pieces for a specific segment of the population.
2) Design – Defining a “church plant” or “new ministry” as simply a logo, website, social media, and content strategy. In its infancy, there is no need to spend money or time on anything other than these things.
3) Implementation – Presuming that neither a denomination nor a planter actually knows “what will work,” we launch (digital-) first to learn (our lessons) first, then grow as we go. This is the alternative to spending money and time on gathering people first then launching.
